Local nonprofits, students and volunteers have been focusing their effort on inspiring apathetic voters, low-income people, communities of color, students, women and other individuals who are not as likely to vote. The group continues to actively educate Fargo residents on bringing identification and proof of residence to the polls November 2nd and the group hopes to greatly increase the number of registered Voters in Minnesota before October 12th, the deadline for pre-registration in MN. The MN Secretary of State Office has recently ordered the printing of Voter registration cards in response to an increase in statewide voter registration drives. According to Clay County Auditor Lori Johnson, they have experienced an increase in voter registration activity and they have ordered an additional 10,000 cards. The cards should be in next week and we have been assured that there are enough cards to handle the active voter registration drives in Moorhead. The Get Out AND Vote Collaborative will continue to host activities to encourage voter turn out on Election Day. On October 7th, the group will host the Walk and Roll for Democracy. This is an event connecting Moorhead and Fargo around the celebration of democracy. The event is non-partisan and focuses on participating in democracy and to encourage people to vote November. WHAT: WALK AND ROLL FOR DEMOCRACY WHEN: OCTOBER 7th AT 5:30pm TO MIDNIGHT **The event kicks off at Moorhead City Hall with several public speakers and live music from "Buck's Band-Its." The crowd will then walk, roll, and ride to Fargo City Hall for a 6:30pm rally with speakers, ending at 7:00pm. Duke ******************************************************** Uniting For Equality A collaborative Project of the People Escaping Poverty Project 116 12th St. South, Moorhead, MN 56560 218-236-5434 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Matt Bakko, or Duke Schempp 236-5434 Forum of the Candidates Focus on Social Issues and Core Community Values The Uniting For Equality Collaborative is holding a Political Forum of Minnesota Candidates on October 28th, 2004. This Forum is being sponsored by UFE, Centro Cultural and the Somali Organizing Committee. This forum will feature District 9A House Candidates and Clay County Commission Candidates. The Forum will begin at 6:30pm and will run until 8:30pm and will be held at Moorhead City Hall Council Chambers on Thursday October 28th, 2004. All 9A Legislative and Clay County Commission Candidates have agreed to attend this forum. The Press and Community are invited to attend. The event will be moderated and will cover six questions composed by the the community, followed by an open town hall session with the candidates. The questions were based on the input and energy of hundreds of Moorhead residents that have taken the time to fill out issue cards as a “listening tool”. The Collaborative conducted a three month Voter registration drive and took the opportunity to ask people to fill out our “listening tools” in preparation for this forum. The questions are also connected to the six Core Community Values developed by the community and are the base of the UFE Collaborative. Each Candidate received the six questions ahead of time and they will be time to respond to each question. The Moderator will ensure that the candidates are given the allotted time to respond. Questions For Candidates Forum October 28th, 2004 1. Community Climate Minnesotans believe raising children in a positive community climate is essential to our community's successful future. Budget cuts at the state level have negatively impacted families in Moorhead. If elected, what will you do to increase access to affordable child care, halting diminishing welfare resources and the continuation and expansion of low paying jobs? 2. Education Many of the people who filled out the “listening tools” represent communities of color. If elected to office, what will you do to make sure that communities of color have equal access to education opportunities at all levels, and how will you address funding education at all levels? 3. Housing Many of our "listening tools" were completed by people who live in public housing, mobile home parks, and low income rental units. Many are losing their apartments and homes due to rehabilitation of housing and a focus on middle income housing. If elected to office, what will you do to create stable and affordable housing options at the county and state levels? 4. Public Safety Many of the people completing "listening tools" believe OR feel this community is safe, has low crime, is quiet, and is a great place to raise a family. However, many of these respondents also indicate racial profiling by police creates discrimination within the community affecting issues of equality within the community. If elected to office, how will you address and work to change these issues your first year in office? 5. Income and Employment There is much concern being expressed about wages in our area communities being insufficient to attain and sustain the ability to be financially independent and self-reliant. People in this community have a vision of more opportunities for families and individuals becoming self-sufficient because of the creation and implementation of higher wage jobs. If elected to office, what will you do to promote and implement job opportunities that will create incentives for employers to offer employees higher wages? 6. Recreation and Sports Recreational programs for youth, after school programs, and equal access to sports are a major concern in the community. State budget cuts have eliminated many of these programs and have resulted in putting more kids on the street. If elected to office, what are you going to do to ensure these programs are funded and sustainable? ************************************ For More Information, child care transportation or Translation, Contact PEPP at 218-236-5434 (30) From media@ipepp.org Wed Oct 20 21:37:32 2004 From: media@ipepp.org (Cheryl Troxel) Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 15:37:32 -0500 Subject: [Media] Draft Press Release for October 28th Forum Message-ID: I think this looks great! I think it's great. The only change I would make (and it's not a big deal) is to cut the who/what/when/where paragraph into just that. When I was reading it, I got bogged down and skipped ahead. Anyway, I will have to miss the meeting tomorrow. I am double booked. See you Friday. Danie and I Met today and went over the Press Release for the 28th. We decided that we need to look at approaching the different media depending on what we want. So, we took the Press release for the TV stations and made it short and consise. The one going to the Fargo Forum, however is longer and more detailed. So, two releases were composed and they were sent out today. Next Week we are working on the "Trick or Vote" and rides to the polls. Watch your mailbox for drafts and ideas to respond to for next week's work. ******************************************************* Here is the Short Release that was sent to TV and Radio Media: Uniting For Equality A collaborative Project of the People Escaping Poverty Project 116 12th St. S.
