This is my first post to the Media@ipepp.org List and it is a MEDIA Team Task! Matt and I met on Thursday, September 16th and crafted a Media Strategy that we believe will work for this group. We would like to generate a story in the next week that puts attention to the Get Out And Vote efforts and also promotes the upcomming Forums and the October 7th Walk and Roll For Democracy. We want to meet again on Thursday, September 23rd at 10:30 AM at PEPP and want people to submit the story ideas, outlines or drafts to this list and we will finalize them on Thursday the 23rd. So Here Ya Go..... For Example: ....Write a half of Page story talking about door knocking and doing voter registration and encountering someone who has never voted before and you registered them and they are now going around their neighborhood registering voters. Get a quote from the person and connect the quote to the excitement about democracy. Or.... .....Tell a story about people who cannot vote but are committed to making sure people who can vote get out and vote..... Or... .....Tell the story of how many Concordia students have been registered and that there is a forum of the candidates, interview a student about why voting is or is not important to them. What we will do with the stories is reshape them into a press release and send them out to the Local Media Stations. We will then do follow up calls within a few days of sending out the Press Releases. About the Time Of the Media Team Meeting If Thursday, September 23rd at 10:30 Am does not work for you to meet as the Media Team, Name some other times you can meet and perhaps we can split the group up to meet at the other times and use this list to communicate, edit and work as a larger group. Just post your response to this list. Those of us involved in this have made a solid honest effort to keep this thing non-partisan. And, in our efforts to tread this political jungle, and deal with the current political climate, we seem to be running into more and more of a reluctance to participate based on who's hosting the event. If you want to get real about it, the event is being hosted by the people, and for the people.....that's it, no more, no less. The opportunity to address a very diverse group of people is looming on the horizon for these candidates. Here is some text plucked from a funding request letter that Kate and I worked on. I thought this text could be edited into a Public Service Announcement we can send out to: 1. Announce the Walk and Roll For Democracy event 2. Recruit Volunteers to help us on October 7th 3. Bring people out to the event to Participate and March 4. Alert the Press to cover the event Anyways, Feel free to take the text and re-work it to get the message clear and then we can then send it out to e-lists and media outlets. Thanks, Duke ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Text for PSA-------------------- The Walk and Roll for Democracy is a rally and walk between Moorhead and Fargo city halls and will focus on Activism, Democracy and Voting. This event is only a portion of our Get Out AND Vote Campaign. For this campaign, we have been teaming up with other organizations in the F-M area and have had quite a bit of success these past six weeks. We have been focusing our effort on inspiring apathetic voters, low-income people, communities of color, students, women and other individuals who are not as likely to vote. During this time we have registered nearly 1,000 voters and hope to greatly increase that number before October 12th, the deadline for pre-registration in MN. Throughout this Campaign, we are also focusing on building leadership within PEPP and the other partner organizations. The Get Out AND Vote Campaign is a tool to build leaders, particularly women and individuals of color, who will be more politically engaged in our community. We anticipate that over 150 people will attend this event. The main goal of this activity is to bring together the Moorhead and Fargo communities around the celebration of Democracy. We have been focusing on creating opportunities for leadership development and many college age women are participating in the visioning and planning of this event. The Walk and Roll Planning Team has put a concerted effort into finding women in the community that are public, have run or held public office and can be inspirational to other women in our community, to speak at the event. For example, Diane Wray Williams, former MN House 9A Representative and current Moorhead City Councilwoman will speak in Moorhead, as well as current School Board Member Sonia Honadel, and several student government leaders from Concordia and Minnesota State University Moorhead. In Fargo, we have Margie Bailey, executive Director of the Fargo Theatre and we have secured Jocelyn Birdick, former US Senator of North Dakota to speak about the importance of women running for political office. We have other speakers to secure as the planning continues. The Rally will begin at the Moorhead City Hall at 5:30 PM at the north door of Moorhead Center Mall with the local old-time Polka Band “Buck's Band-Its” playing patriotic music. Several prominent Public Speakers and Activists will rally the crowd with speeches that will focus on the importance of Participatory Democracy and Community Engagement. The crowd will then walk, roll, and ride on a short route to the Fargo City Hall at 200 3rd Street North for a 6:30 PM rally of speakers who are committed to inspiring the community to vote and get others involved in Democracy. The event will end at 7 PM at Fargo City Hall. At 8 PM, an All Age “Rock the Vote” Concert will be hosted by Eve’s Action at the Downtown Fargo Great Northern Restaurant from 8:00 PM to Midnight. This event is part of the “Virgin Voters” Campaign through the Women’s Network of the Red River Valley and will focus on registering new young voters, particularly young women. This project is sponsored by The Get Out AND Vote Collaborative of Non-Profit Organizations. Groups include Students from MSUM, Concordia and Moorhead High School, Members Of People Escaping Poverty Project, Dorothy Day House, Freedom Resource Center For Independent Living, Centro Cultural De Fargo-Moorhead, the Women’s Network of the Red River Valley, Eve’s Action and Community Member Volunteers. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ From media@ipepp.org Wed Sep 22 22:17:34 2004 From: media@ipepp.org (Sue Halvorson) Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2004 16:17:34 -0500 Subject: [Media] Need to Develop PSA for Walk and Roll References: <1057.65.164.217.106.1095867005.squirrel@65.164.217.106> Message-ID: <001501c4a0e9$94a1eac0$a512efd8@Dorothy> The announcement is great.
