Duke -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Waking The Sleeping Giant to Hold Press Conference about Federal Budget Impact When: Wednesday, December 14 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Where: YWCA Meeting Room 3000 S. University Drive, Fargo, ND --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Waking the sleeping Giant has joined forces with a National Movement to create awareness about the impact of the Federal Budget. Press Conferences are happening across the nation and are pressuring Members of Congress to oppose the budget reconciliation. Huge cuts in Medicaid, Food Stamps, Child Support and other necessary services and programs will deteriorate our communities and will increase the deficit and increase the US debt. ***The effects of the budget reconciliation are simply the wrong priority for our community*** Cass and Clay nonprofits will be greatly impacted by this federal budget proposal. Local Organizations want to preserve the services that exist and improve people’s lives and the quality of life in our community. The federal budget tears larger holes into the safety net as nonprofit organization's work for the greater good in our community. As families prepare for holidays and deal with the high cost of heating, the congress has proposed reckless budget cuts that may bankrupt the country and further victimize families in poverty. What Can You Do? Join us on Wednesday, December 14th and show solidarity for our community non-profits. Bring constituents and clients. They need the organizational support and a voice. Your presence will send a message that we are united, organized and support a better quality of life in our community. Expect further e-mails and phone calls as we pull this press conference together. If you have questions or ideas, call PEPP at 236-5434 and we will take your ideas and put them into ACTION! ###### ************************************************************ We ask that Participants remember to refrain from strong smelling scents when attending this meeting because the health of people may be negatively impacted when breathing them. ************************************************************* From karinna18@hotmail.com Tue Dec 13 15:33:44 2005 From: karinna18@hotmail.com (Karin Almjeld) Date: Tue, 13 Dec 2005 09:33:44 -0600 Subject: [Media] Op-Ed idea? In-Reply-To: <1175.192.168.154.9.1133380084.squirrel@www.ipepp.org> Message-ID:

Good morning all-

Though I can't usually make the Media Alliance meetings, I'm glad to still follow along via email.

I have an idea for an op-ed piece, and I can probably get a first draft.  The biggest problem is that, in my current job, I cannot print it.  (Americorps rules).  Anyway, I know the non-profit I work for is experiencing huge budget crunches due to the trickle-down effect of federal budgeting--fed. doesn't adequately fund the states, which can't adequately fund communities.  Both state and local money is then cut off from local non-profits.  So, non-profits turn to grants, which are becoming increasingly competitive, and also turn to their communitites.  And with so much need, on so many levels, the community can only give so much.

The long and short of the whole thing is, because the Bushies are "funding" a war by cutting taxes, local programs suffer.  My org. gives out scholarships for kids who otherwise couldn't participate in after-school activities.  We've had to cut the amount we can give each child, and the mentoring program I work with is in some danger, if we can't find funding.   I'm sure that among the various places that you live & work, you know of similar examples--food pantries that can't keep up with need; programs charging for things that used to be free; etc.  I don't think that many lines have been drawn connecting what happens in Bushworld and what happens here, and I think some people could use a dose of reality.

End rant.  If you all think this might be a worthwhile thing to do, let me know, and I can try to come up with an actual informed opinion, instead of the above rant.

Thanks, Karin Almjeld
