Deborah White letter: Just another staged photo opportunity

The Forum - 09/25/2005

George Bush has once again demonstrated his penchant for staged photo opportunities over real action.
In his recent address to the American people from hurricane-ravaged New Orleans, he pledged to work to reduce racial and economic inequalities that resulted in such disparate suffering from Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, his other public statements have already proven this pledge to be disingenuous.
Bush declared that he will not use tax increases to raise funds for hurricane relief, undoubtedly welcome news to wealthy Americans who disproportionately benefited from Bushs earlier tax cuts. Instead, he proposes that we cut government spending, further eroding already strained programs that serve disadvantaged Americans.
So much for reducing inequality.
